Facebook’s recommendation system optimizes for engagement by learning which content triggers emotional response. For teens, this often results in amplified exposure to appearance-focused content, social comparison, and polarizing themes.
How To Export Your Data
Step 1: Access Facebook Settings
Open Facebook on your child’s device, either through the mobile app or a web browser.
Tap the menu icon with three horizontal lines.
Scroll down and select “Settings & privacy,” then select “Settings.”
Step 2: Request Your Information
Scroll to the section labeled “Your information.”
Select “Download your information.” This opens Facebook’s data download tool.
Step 3: Select Date Range and Format
Choose the desired date range.
Select the format as “JSON” and set media quality to “High.”
Select categories related to viewed content, interactions, searches, and followed accounts. Private messages are not required.
You remain in control of what is included. A more complete export of feed and engagement activity ensures clearer visibility. If categories are excluded, those signals cannot be reflected in your brief.
Step 4: Create File
Select “Create file.”
Facebook will begin preparing the data file.
Depending on account size, processing time may range from a few minutes to up to 48 hours.
Step 5: Download the File
Facebook will notify you via notification and email once the file is ready.
Return to “Download your information” and download the file.
The file will be delivered as a .zip archive.
